A Review of Windows Defender

If you’re looking for a simple low-cost security option, the suite that is built into Windows 10 or 11 is a great option. It’s also known as Windows Security or Microsoft Defender It combines security for antivirus, devices monitoring, a firewall and kid protection (you can set permissions to what your children can do online) and a host of other features.

Aside from the usual malware detection, neutralization and prevention capabilities, it also has a password manager as well as anti-phishing tools. The firewall monitors both inbound and outbound connections, including Wi-Fi networks. It also comes with the option to see detailed information on suspicious connections.

In our tests it did a great job in blocking most malicious downloads and phishing sites. The reputation-based protection system it uses is an enormous database online to assign websites and apps reputation scores. Software with low scores are automatically blocked. It also provides security against exploits, which guards against attacks that attempt to alter the settings of your computer.

While it does a solid job overall, it doesn’t have the malware detection rates of standalone competitors like Norton or Bitdefender. Although it does include the password manager, it doesn’t offer other essential features such as an optimizer for your PC or a VPN. The customer support options are extensive, though they have a large user base including extensive FAQs and forums, and a variety of methods to get in contact with a tech expert via live chat or email.
